The leg extension machine focuses mainly on your quads (quadriceps) muscles as well as the rectus femoris and vastus muscles..
With this machine and other prime machines, you can manipulate where the weight load is going to be across three points. If you put it on the top, the weight is going to be heavier at the bottom part of the movement, middle - mid range, and at the bottom range there is going to be more tension as the top of the movement.
Consider the ankle pad and the back pad. With the ankle pad you want to make sure its around the ankles. With the back pad you want to make sure you are not pushed too far forward, and that your hips and lower back are pressed all the way in. There is one more lever - further in you are going to get more of a stretch on the quad, further out less. Form during the excercise, pull onto the side handles, pulling yourself hard into the seat with your chest up and abs braced. Lifting in a controlled upward and downward motion.
